Route Running
Pros:
•Good variety of release packages
•Good footwork on releases and at the top of the route
•Can create separation mainly on dig routes
•Utilizes tempo changes well during releases
•Understands leverage and changes route stems based on leverage
Cons:
•Can't separate on deep routes
•Rarely uses frame to get open
•Struggles to create separation consistently
•Doesn’t use tempo changes during routes
•Telegraphs cuts by raising pad level at times
RAC / YAC Ability
Pros:
•Secures ball after catch
•Looks to get upfield after catch
•Decent field awareness to know where defenders are
Cons:
•Doesn’t have breakaway speed
•Not great at breaking tackles
•Doesn’t have great acceleration after catch
•Doesn’t have any juke moves to speak of
Athleticism / Frame
Pros:
•Good size (6’3” 210)
•Good vertical (37”)
Cons:
•Lacks acceleration and top-end speed to separate
•Lackluster arm length for a big-bodied receiver
•Pretty small hands
•Would like to have a bigger catch radius for his size
Ball Skills
Pros:
•Showed to be a good hands catcher
•Good body control on the sideline
•Could track deep balls decently well when given the opportunity
•Good on contested catches (53%)
•Good at catching in traffic
Cons:
•Struggled with concentration drops (12.5% drop rate senior year)
•Could take his eyes off of the ball at times
•Would struggle with positioning on 50/50 balls downfield at times
Game IQ / Processing
Pros:
•Could identify coverage and sit in soft spots, often drifting away from coverage
•Would adjust his route stems and use releases based on defensive alignment
•Could find work downfield when a run broke away
•Would help QB when scrambling by running to space or blocking defender
Cons:
•None
Agility / Twitch
Pros:
•Good short area awareness after catch to make a quick cut
•Cuts short routes with solid, sharp angles
Cons:
•Doesn’t have good burst out of catch or out of routes breaks
•Doesn’t have good twitchy juke moves
•Can be slow in deep route breakdowns (comebacks and deep curls)
Versatility
Pros:
•Has slot/wide versatility
•Utilized in motion sometimes
Cons:
•Not utilized as a run blocker regularly
•Not a big red zone target
•Not a big special teams guy
Run Blocking
Pros:
•Showed good effort at times when asked to block safety
•Showed good effort when blocking in open field for screens and outside runs
Cons:
•Would like to see better technique when blocking
•Wasn’t asked to be a primary run blocker or lead blocker much
•Would lack effort sometimes when first assignment wasn’t there
Games Watched:
•Week 1 vs PRTST, Week 3 vs ECU, Week 4 vs COLO, Week 6 vs ARIZ, Week 10 vs TCU, BIG XII CC vs TTU
Ideal Situation:
•Chase Roberts is an older prospect (25) coming out of BYU. He is the prototypical big-bodied receiver, standing at 6’3”, 210 lbs. He has good hands when contested and through contact, but struggles with concentration drops on the easier throws. His route running is solid in the short and intermediate levels of the field, showing good footwork on breaks, but he can lack acceleration out of those breaks. He struggles deep with deceleration and creating separation in general, and can telegraph cuts by raising his pad level at times. He isn’t a big YAC threat either, as he doesn’t have the acceleration or breakaway speed to make defenses worry. He is middling as a run blocker, pretty good when asked to block smaller corners, but would like to see better technique and more physicality when blocking in the open field, especially for his size. The Raiders signed him as an undrafted free agent, and I would give this a B-. He has some special teams experience from a few years back and will have to get used to it in Vegas. He currently projects as WR8-9 on the roster, so he won’t be seeing the field aside from special teams, but if he does, he would specialize as a big 3rd down target. He is joining a largely unproven WR room in Vegas, so he does have the opportunity to move up a few spots.

Hopefully he can progress in his route running and contribute much like Rod Streeter did years ago.
