Route Running
Pros:
•Stems are the same across all routes and doesn’t show his route intention during the stem
•Doesn’t really telegraph cuts and doesn’t waste steps or movement on cuts
•Gets out of cuts pretty fast
•Doesn’t get help up by press at all and can beat it in a few different ways
•Can gain separation out of breaks and extends it with good burst out of breaks
Cons:
•Unconvincing releases on the goal line because every corner knows he’s running a fade
•Not a very creative route runner and stems his routes straight every time
•Can sometimes show a lack of effort when route running when he knows the ball isn’t going to him
•Didn’t really use and exploit blind spots in DBs
RAC / YAC Ability
Pros:
•Great burst after catching the ball and getting upfield
•Surprisingly shifty in short areas with a good juke move
•Long strider and has a top gear to outrun defenders
•Moves with contact instead of against it and fights for extra yards
Cons:
•Not many moves to speak of at speed
•Would like to see a better stiff arm with his arm length
Athleticism / Frame
Pros:
•Very good long speed
•6’4” with higher-end arm length and hand size
•Top 40 RAS score for receivers all time (9.9/10)
Cons:
•None
Ball Skills
Pros:
•Natural hands catcher and doesn’t really ever catch with his body
•Made a few good catches on the sideline without going out of bounds
•Great at tracking the ball and great at adjusting to bad throws
•60% contested catcher
•Really good hands and ball tracking on contested catches
Cons:
•Catch radius felt rather low for a guy with longer arms
Game IQ / Processing
Pros:
•Slowed up in space a few times, especially on underneath routes
Cons:
•Didn’t do a great job of getting open when QB was in trouble
Agility / Twitch
Pros:
•Great hip drop at speed for curls and comebacks
•Very quick in and out of breaks even at speed
•Showed good quickness in short areas while in traffic
Cons:
•None
Versatility
Pros:
•Played outside and in the slot
•Motioned around a bit
Cons:
•Not much special teams experience
•Can’t really provide much as a returner
Run Blocking
Pros:
•Downfield blocking isn’t bad
Cons:
•Not much run blocking on tape
•Didn’t show much form at all and didn’t try most the time
Games Watched:
•Week 1 vs MISS, Week 2 vs MEM, Week 3 vs MUR, Week 8 vs USA, Week 9 vs CCU
Ideal Situation:
•Ted Hurst was the single bright spot on what was a very disappointing year for the Georgia State Panthers after going 1-11. Getting over 1000 yards while also being the main focus of the defense is quite impressive. His route-running and ability to get open and stay open were impressive. His hands were also very solid, and he didn’t catch with his body at all. Route running was quite good; he had a strong hip drop and got in and out of breaks quickly. His contested catching was his main selling point, as he made quite a few highlight-worthy plays this past year with the Panthers. My main knocks on him were his level of competition (he played in the Sun Belt), his sometimes-lacking effort overall, and his disinterest in the run game. The jump to the NFL might be a little more difficult than the average prospect because the competition he faced in college wasn’t the highest. The Bucs took him in the third round, and this is an A- grade. With Mike Evans leaving, this leaves a lot of vacated targets to go around. A lot is going to go to Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin, but I believe that Hurst can carve out a role as an X receiver in this offense and get a good amount of targets throughout the year.
Rating
•Route Running – 8.6/10
•RAC / YAC Ability – 7.8/10
•Athleticism / Frame – 9.3/10
•Ball Skills – 8.9/10
•Game IQ / Processing – 5.9/10
•Agility / Twitch – 7.1/10
•Versatility – 6.9/10
•Run Blocking – 4.0/10
