Full Scouting Report

Route Running
Pros:
•Sinks his hips well
•Accelerates out of his breaks well
•Comes back to the ball immediately
•Ran a diverse route tree
•Sets up his breaks well by stemming
•Utilizes head fakes
•Stops on a dime with ease
Cons:
•Press release was never tested
•Never had to face super physical corners
•Cuts can be too rounded
•Average depth of target was 3.3 yards, which is insanely low, basically means most of his yards came after the catch and relied on screens
RAC / YAC Ability
Pros:
•Crazy acceleration after the catch
•Gets upfield in a hurry
•Can break tackles and get slippery in space
•Ankle-breaking capabilities
•Falls forward to pick up extra yards and finishes with physicality
•Possesses the home run speed to take it to the house
•Legs don’t stop churning
•Shows really solid contact balance for his size
Cons:
•Takes him to long to process running lanes occasionally
•Moves side to side instead of getting upfield every now
Athleticism / Frame
Pros:
•Hand size is pretty average
•9.04 RAS Score
•38” vertical
•10.05 broad jump
•4.35 40 is very, very good, and his 10 and 20 yard splits were also really good
Cons:
•Very limited to the slot at 5’8 ⅝”
•Thinner frame
•Very small catch radius with an arm length of only 29 ⅜”
Ball Skills
Pros:
•Has shown he can take a lick after securing the catch and hold onto it
•Tucks the ball as fast as possible
•Can make tough back shoulder catches
•2 drops on 78 targets is reliable pass catcher stats
Cons:
•Can struggle to finish through contact
•Body catches too much
•Jumps for balls when he doesn’t need to
•His jump ball ability at the next level will be very limited because of his arm length
Game IQ / Processing
Pros:
•No fear of going over the middle of the field
•Adjusts his routes very well to not get knocked off of them by physical LBs
•Gets to the green grass and makes himself available
•Really solid in scramble drill and showed that he can improvise routes to get open
Cons:
•Lack of situational awareness to stay in bounds against Ole Miss in a chew clock scenario
Agility / Twitch
Pros:
•Super twitchy
•Ton of agility
•Has that human joystick factor
•Weaves through traffic over the middle of the field on his routes
Cons:
•None
Versatility
Pros:
•Got motioned around a lot
•Lined up at H-back a couple times
•Was a lethal returnman in his career
Cons:
•Very limited to the slot
Run Blocking
Pros:
•Great effort in run blocking
•Shows grit and physicality
Cons:
•His frame will limit how effective of a blocker he will be
•Struggles to maintain blocks against bigger guys
Games Watched:
•Week 1 vs MRSH, Week 7 vs MISS, Week 5 vs UK, Week 6 vs AUB, Week 9 vs MSST
Ideal Situation:
•Zachariah Branch is a very entertaining player. He plays with a ton of energy and passion. I consistently saw him put in a lot of effort in the run game. I think it will be hard for him not to get a lot of snaps this season, and he should eventually earn a starting role. He has shown some crafty route-running ability. His ability to kick it into a different gear and fly up the field is unlike any other. Branch can juke you out of your shoes or drop the shoulder to deliver a tough hit while falling forward and picking up extra yards. Branch is the kind of player who plays like he is 6’3” and 235lbs rather than not even 5’9” and 177lbs. He can also take it to the house in a blink with his 4.35 40 time. Branch showed he could be a reliable pass catcher out of the slot. He also plays very smart and regularly finds holes in the defense to exploit. Branch is also incredibly twitchy at the top of his route and as a playmaker. He can provide a team a lot of versatility as well, with his past experience as a punt returner, who can be motioned all over the field, lined up in the backfield, or at H-back at times as a decoy. While his run blocking isn’t perfect and is limited because of his size, he puts in a lot of effort. I do believe Branch will be a successful player, but he has some things holding him back at the moment. While he has shown some nuance in route-running, his breaks can be inconsistent. I never really saw him face a hard press or super physical corners, and he was mainly running very short bubble screens and quick hitters. While he is very athletic, his frame can still cause problems. He has very short arms, so that could limit his ability to make catches away from his frame. Branch sometimes jumps unnecessarily when going for receptions, changing his eye level and potentially leading to drops in the future. All that said, Zachariah Branch was selected in the 3rd Round, Pick 79, by the Atlanta Falcons. Personally, I love this pick, and I think he could immediately start seeing snaps on special teams or could take a starter's spot. I think he could end up taking Jahan Dotson’s spot, as he hasn’t been the greatest receiver since the Commanders drafted him in the First Round in 2022. I think the combination of Drake London, Kyle Pitts, Zachariah Branch, and Olamide Zaccheaus could work into a decent receiving core for Michael Penix Jr. or Tua Tagovailoa. If Branch doesn’t earn a spot as a starter in his rookie season as a contributor, I think he will for sure by year 2.
